T’ai Chi for Seniors
We offer two programs for seniors. T'ai Chi/T'ai Chi in the Park consists of warm-up exercises which focus on developing the strength component of balance, relaxation and breath training to improve circulation and the T’ai Chi movements which provide low impact load bearing, stretching and coordinated movement training. This class meets once per week. T'ai Chi in the Park is held outdoors in Riverside Park.
T’ai Chi Moving for Better Balance program is one of 14 Fall Prevention programs recommended by the CDC. This evidence based T’ai Chi Fall prevention program approach targets functional training for bilateral and unilateral stance (and transition), stepping forward, stepping sideways, stepping backward.(gait and balance). A systematic review of 47 studies (9 RCT’s, 23 NRS’s, and 15 observational studies) concluded that: “T’ai Chi appears to have physiological and psychosocial benefits and also appears to be safe and effective in promoting balance control, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness in older patients with chronic conditions”. This class meets twice per week.
